Captain Jachu Jachowicz is one of the MiG-29 pilots from the Polish Air Force detachment deployed to Šiauliai Air Base, Lithuania, executing NATO’s standing Baltic Air Policing mission. In 2000, right after graduating from school, he joined the Air Force. After about three years of flight training and other courses he graduated as a fully trained MiG-29 pilot. He is originally member of 22nd Tactical Air Base in Malbork, Poland.

At the end of April 2014 a team of about 30 soldiers from Great Britain arrived at Šiauliai Air Base, Lithuania, to prepare for the arrivals of the Typhoon fighter jets augmenting the NATO Air Policing Mission over the Baltic States. One of them is Warrant Officer Derek McDonough.

In 1931, Šiauliai Air Base was built by the Lithuanian Government and used for military aviation. Following the Soviet annexation in 1940 and the World War II occupation 1941-1944, the Soviets operated the base again after the war.

On 18 July the leadership and staff of Allied Air Command at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, gathered for a very special recognition. Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Philip Breedlove, awarded the command two Allied Command Operations Campaign Pennants for outstanding efforts, unswerving engagement and superb commitment to ISAF from 2003 to 2014 and to Operation Unified Protector in 2011. The General attached the pennants the Air Command flag in a brief ceremony.

On 30 April, the Polish Air Force took over NATO’s Baltic Air Policing (BAP) mission as the lead nation at Siauliai, Lithuania; the United Kingdom also at Siauliai, Denmark at Amari, Estonia, and France at Malbork, Poland, joined the mission as augmenting nations. The North Atlantic Council invited Allies to contribute to this enhanced Air Policing posture on the Eastern border of the Alliance.
