NATO DACCC conducts live COMAO training.

The NATO Deployable Air Command and Control Centre (DACCC) at Poggio Renatico, Italy, successfully executed a live training Composite Air Operation (COMAO), an exercise using a variety of Italian Air Force assets and capabilities, combined into a single mission.

The planning and execution of Italian Air Force COMAOs had been a task that was conducted by Combined Air Operations Centre (CAOC) at Poggio Renatico; however, the NATO DACCC had not participated since the closure of the CAOC due to the reorganization of the NATO Command Structure. Recently, the DACCC has been granted authority from HQ AIRCOM to re-initiate this valuable live training opportunity.

The planning and execution of live exercises enables the DACCC’s mission to prepare its DAOC (Deployable Air Operations Centre) and DARS (Deployable Air Control Centre, Recognised Air Picture Production Centre and Sensor Fusion Post) for their assigned tasks. The scenario involved policing of a No Fly Zone and the protection of an offensive mission to a target airfield. It also incorporated a dynamic scenario where the aircrews had to search for a vehicle carrying weapons, while the necessary legal authorizations were sought in order to destroy the target. To further enhance the dynamic nature of the mission, an unlocated Surface Based Air Defence System (SBAD) was placed on the target airfield to provide additional complexity to the mission for the aircrew, the control agency and the DAOC.

The DAOC acted as a forward deployed Joint Force Air Component (JFAC) and was supported by Italian Air Force Control and Reporting Centre (CRC) Pioppo and Italian Air Force Eurofighters, Tornados, AMX and a K-767 tanker; the Italian Air Force also deployed an SBAD unit to Cervia airfield to make the play more realistic.

"The added pressures of dealing with real weather, real aircraft and above all real people, offers realistic training opportunities that just do not exist in the synthetic environment,” said Lt Col Ronchi, the NATO DACCC planning lead for the live COMAO. "The value of exercising in the live domain must not be underestimated.”

"This was a unique opportunity to fully exercise the capabilities of the NATO DACCC in a live environment and to demonstrate the excellent working relationship that we have with our Italian Air Force hosts” said the Deputy Commander of the DACCC, Brigadier General Stoye.
